Xiaomi is sweeping the market, and it’s doing it at a breakneck speed.
Their desire to provide high-quality products at reasonable costs continues to astound me.
I’m a huge Xiaomi fan, it’s my go to phone company, for now, my backpack is also their product. Having tried out the Mi True Wireless Earbuds Basic 2, also known as the Redmi AirDots 2, here is what I think about them.
These Earbuds replaced the standard Redmi AirDots and were released in 2020.
The design
The Mi True Wireless Earbuds Basic 2 come in a small matte black case with the MI branding on top. It’s small enough to be comfortably pocketable, has a wired charging, and closes with a nice thunk. The case can also charge the earbuds on transit. It however feels cheap while holding it. The earbuds themselves have a matte finish and a sleek design.
The Mi True Wireless Earbuds Basic 2 are high-quality earbuds with built-in microphones for accepting calls and connecting to the Google voice assistant, weighing only 4.1g per earbud. On both earphones, the AirDots have a multi-function button that can be used to answer/end calls, control media playing, and wake the Google Voice assistant. They have a Bluetooth 5.0 chip and a 7.2mm dynamic driver that may be used in stereo or mono mode.
Battery life
Battery life is the one criteria where the Mi True Wireless Earbuds Basic 2 can’t measure up. But, Xiaomi says one should expect approximately 4 hours after a full charge while continuously using them and approximately 12 hours together with the charging case. I get just that, so no complains.
The total time spent playing online music continuously at 50% volume from full charge to automatic power off is the battery life test criterion. The value is provided as a guide only; real battery life will vary depending on external factors such as the environment and usage. A micro USB port is used to charge the charging case. There is no charging cable included, and users must purchase one individually.
Sound
That aside, they deliver on the sound front, but do not expect much. The bass and treble are dialed up and in one word, pleasing. The sound occasionally goes quavery hoarse sometimes especially when walking on a busy street, but on the whole, performance is solid.
If you’re at the noisiest of places, just take them off, they won’t be of help. They do not have Active Noise Cancellation, but, you would expect that at the price point.
The Good
- Very affordable
- Good sound
- Classic design
- Good battery life
The Meh Stuff
- Multi-function buttons are, well, not so functional
- A meh but passable microphone
- Loss of sound due to minor obstacles
Availability and pricing
The earbuds are available on Jumia at Sh 2,499.
So, would I recommend? Yes. For that price, these earbuds have nailed the basics and will serve you well.
