Apple introduced iOS 16, the next significant update to its operating system, on Monday. It is now known which iPhone models are supported by iOS 16 as the upgrade was formally announced during the opening keynote at WWDC 2022.
Surprisingly, iOS 16 requires an iPhone 8 or later, according to Apple’s website. This means that Apple has ceased production of the original iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 7. The iPod touch, which was discontinued last month, will no longer be able to receive iOS updates.
Here’s a list of all iPhone models that are compatible with iOS 16:
- iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
- iPhone X
- iPhone XS and XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max
- iPhone 12 and 12 mini
- iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max
- iPhone 13 and 13 mini
- iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max
- iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd gen)
Apple previewed iOS 16, which includes the biggest overhaul to the Lock Screen ever, as well as new sharing, communication, and intelligence features that will revolutionize the way consumers interact with their iPhone.

iOS 16 offers iCloud Shared Photo Library, which allows users to easily share a collection of photos with family, tweaks to Messages and Mail that make it easier to keep in touch, and dramatic improvements to Live Text and Visual Look Up.
