Squid Game has been officially renewed for a second season on Netflix.
According to director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s message, Gi-hun and the mysterious Front Man will return in the second season. The message also mentions that the man in the suit with ddakji might be back, and that we’ll meet Cheol-su, Young-hee’s boyfriend.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year. But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever,” Hwang writes. “As the writer, director, and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show… Join us once more for a whole new round.”

This was swiftly followed by layoffs and a reported tightening of production budgets almost everywhere. Netflix is also focusing on preventing password sharing and has informed staff that ad-supported streaming will be available by the end of the year.
At the time of its release, the series was the most popular on Netflix. Last year, Hwang stated that season two was in the “planning process,” while Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos stated that “the Squid Game universe has just begun.” In other words, we all knew season two was on the way, but now it’s official.
It’s unknown when season two will premiere – or whether it’s even finished yet. Hwang told a media outlet that the next season of Squid Game will be released by the end of 2023 or 2024 and will include more devious games. So, if you want to see what kind of problems Gi-hun gets himself into next, you might have to wait a year or two.
