Twitter has announced new monetization tools for creators on its platform, allowing them to offer subscriptions, tips and video ads to their followers.
In a series of tweets, Twitter CEO Elon Musk said that creators can apply to offer their followers subscriptions of any material, from longform text to hours long video, by tapping on “Monetization” in settings.
He also said that for the next 12 months, Twitter will keep none of the money from subscriptions and tips, and will only charge a small fee after the first year. He added that Twitter will help promote the creators’ work and that they can leave the platform and take their work with them at any point.
Twitter’s new monetization tools include Super Follows, which lets creators offer extra content and interaction as a monthly subscription, Tips, which lets followers tip creators on their profile using a third-party payment service, and Amplify Pre-Roll and Amplify Sponsorships, which are video monetization programs that serve pre-roll ads or sponsorships against premium video content.
According to Twitter’s website, creators who want to monetize on Twitter must meet certain eligibility, content and conduct standards, such as having at least 10,000 active followers for subscriptions, featuring an authentic identity on their profile, and not violating Twitter’s rules on safety, authenticity and privacy.
Twitter said that its goal is to maximize creator prosperity and that its monetization features are designed to help creators turn their ideas into cash using Twitter’s latest tools.
