Sony has announced a revamped model of its PlayStation 5 video game console that is lighter and more compact.
The new PS5 will be available starting in November in the U.S. at select retailers and on the company’s website. It will roll out globally over the following months.
The new model has been reduced in volume by more than 30% and weighs between 18-24% less than previous versions, depending on whether it is the standard or Digital Edition. It will come in a glossy top shell and matte bottom shell.
“To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility,” the company said in its announcement.
Sony said once inventory of the original PS5 is sold, the new model will be the only one available for purchase. The recommended retail prices will remain the same, starting at $499.99 for the standard edition with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and $449.99 for the Digital Edition without a disc drive.
The revamped console will launch alongside several high-profile games this holiday season, including “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” “Alan Wake 2” and “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.”
Sony said the changes were made to “address the evolving needs of players.” The new form factor aims to provide “greater choice and flexibility.” It contains the same technological features and performance as the original model.
“The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage,” the company stated.
Owners of the Digital Edition will also be able to purchase an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray drive separately for $79.99. The new model will include a horizontal stand, and a vertical stand will be sold separately for $29.99.
Custom console covers in new colors are expected to launch in early 2024, starting at $54.99.
